Europe has primarily been characterized either by its non-proactive or sporadic foreign policy in the Middle East — lacking continental unity in responding to Turkey’s military incursion and failing to offer full support in Tunisia’s democratization. With the EU subject to increasing criticism for its neutrality in Middle Eastern conflicts, is it time to fill Europe’s vacancy with a more unified, determined strategy ?
Europe has major stakes in encouraging Saudi Iranian de-escalation and solidifying its stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. And while it is clear that stabilizing the Middle East brings security benefits, better access to energy sources, and more favorable trade deals for Europe, the question of how exactly Europe should position itself on the geopolitical landscape remains fraught.
