R\u00e9duit en esclavage par les troupes ottomanes lors de la reconqu\u00eate du territoire en 1922, il racontera son histoire dans un livre intitul\u00e9 <em>La Grande Piti\u00e9<\/em> (\u00c9ditions du Pavois, 1945). Il poursuivra par la suite l'\u00e9criture, notamment avec deux suites \u00e0 <em>La Grande Piti\u00e9<\/em>. \r\n\r\nPers\u00e9cut\u00e9 par le r\u00e9gime autoritaire grec, puis par l'occupation allemande, il est arr\u00eat\u00e9 en 1943, mais rel\u00e2ch\u00e9 gr\u00e2ce au soutien d'intellectuels, de scientifiques et de nombreuses personnalit\u00e9s. \r\n\r\nl\u00edas Ven\u00e9zis a remport\u00e9 le premier prix de litt\u00e9rature de l\u2019\u00c9tat grec en 1939 pour son roman S\u00e9r\u00e9nit\u00e9 et il a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 deux reprises candidat pour le prix Nobel de litt\u00e9rature, en 1960 et 1964. Il d\u00e9c\u00e8de en 1973 \u00e0 Ath\u00e8nes.
