Poland and Hungary after the fall of the Soviet Union were considered two of the most successful post-communist transitions to a liberal democracy. However, with the election of leaders like Viktor Orban in Hungary and the large popularity of Poland\u2019s ultra right-wing government led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the future of liberal democracies in these EU countries has come into question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How do we reconcile the commitment to an \u2018ever closer union\u2019 with national governments that strike out on new courses ? What alternative methods can be used by the EU and Member States to resolve the Polish and Hungarian disputes beyond Article 7 ? More broadly, how does the EU better preempt and grapple with legitimate national concerns of sovereignty ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Join us as we move forward with our European Wednesdays debate series, this week on the theme of the recent rise of illiberal democracies and the accompanying political polarization in the EU, following last week’s debate on Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
