{"id":61502,"date":"2020-02-29T00:29:03","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T23:29:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/legrandcontinent.eu\/fr\/?post_type=event&#038;p=61502"},"modified":"2020-05-06T17:01:18","modified_gmt":"2020-05-06T15:01:18","slug":"how-is-europe-lived-by-europeans","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/legrandcontinent.eu\/fr\/evenements\/how-is-europe-lived-by-europeans\/","title":{"rendered":"Will lockdown turn Europeans radical&#160;?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Even though we had to cancel most of our events due to the pandemic, we come back on Zoom on the 08th of May, from 4 pm to 5 pm (London time) for an online discussion with Professor Timothy Garton Ash about a study he conducted in cooperation with the Bertelsmann Foundation&#160;:&nbsp; \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/eupinions.eu\/de\/text\/in-crisis-europeans-support-radical-positions\">In Crisis, Europeans Support Radical Positions<\/a>\u2019, published today, the 6th of May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some striking findings of this Europe-wide poll&#160;:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>71&#160;% of Europeans support the introduction of a universal basic income (UBI).&nbsp;<\/li><li>53&#160;% of young Europeans place more confidence in authoritarian states than democracies to handle the climate crisis.<\/li><li>58&#160;% of Europeans would like EU countries to reduce their carbon emissions to no excess emissions by 2030<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings are summarized and analysed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/commentisfree\/2020\/may\/06\/better-world-coronavirus-young-europeans-democracy-universal-basic-income\">an article by Professor Timothy Garton in <em>the Guardian<\/em><\/a>. According to him, these radical opinions could lead to very different outcomes&#160;: will the coronavirus crisis pave the way to more equal societies, or to authoritarianism everywhere&#160;? Do the findings of the survey match your personal experience of the crisis&#160;? Will these radical opinions vanish into thin air once the lockdown will be lifted or will they remain for the foreseeable future&#160;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Timothy Garton Ash&nbsp;is the author of ten books of political writing or \u2018history of the present\u2019 which have charted the transformation of Europe over the last half-century. He is Professor of European Studies at the University of Oxford, Isaiah Berlin Professorial Fellow at St Antony\u2019s College, Oxford, and a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. His essays appear regularly in the&nbsp;<em>New York Review of Books<\/em>&nbsp;and he writes a column on international affairs in the&nbsp;<em>Guardian&nbsp;<\/em>which is widely syndicated in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No debate experience or political background is necessary.
